Update on New Foam Mattress

I posted on Instagram a few weeks ago about the delivery of our new foam mattress, so I felt that I should report back to you on how it worked out for us. My report is surprising.

The Foam Mattress

The foam mattress was frozen solid on delivery. It must have been on the truck overnight when it was minus 20. (You may recall that we are still waiting for spring). They delivered it around noon the following day. By about five pm it was still hard and it was the same at 10. I decided to brave it as this was our new mattress and I felt I had to try it out. @Geraintthewelsh said I was foolish and chose another bed. He felt there was no point in the both of us having a poor sleep on a hard mattress.

It turns out he was right. I slept terribly and woke up with a sore neck and a headache and my hip hurt. These were problems I didn’t have before we went to bed. After 24 hours, the bed had thawed but still felt very hard, so we went to the @sleepcountry to tell them about our concerns.

Breaking-In Period

It seems there is a breaking-in period for foam mattresses, that we were not told about. Apparently you have to crawl around and jump on them to loosen up the cells. They said if we did this for two weeks, the bed should loosen up. I don’t know about you, but I thought when you bought a bed, you brought it home and went to sleep, end of story. We were not interested in a break-in process.

If we had been told about the break-in process, we would not have bought the foam mattress in the first place. Once we knew this, all sorts of questions came to mind. If we jumped on it for a while, would it eventually become as soft as the one in the store? What if we jumped on it too much and made it too soft? What if we if we missed spots, would it be uneven? The whole idea seemed ridiculous. The bigger question is why doesn’t the factory do the jumping so you don’t have to?

New Mattress

Anyway, as part of our “one hundred night agreement,” we were able to switch our bed for a traditional Sealy that does not need any jumping on or breaking in. Now we have a wonderful bed that makes you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud. Finally back to restful sleeps for us.

What is the take-away from this? I am sure that a lot of people find great comfort in foam mattress. Perhaps the breaking-in process is not necessary for all brands, but the main thing is to ask lots of questions. I wish you luck in the bed shopping process. It is not always easy buying a new bed.

Always

Leslie
