Many of us have traditional furniture or antiques in our modern homes. They may have been passed down or gifted or chosen ourselves. But sometimes it is hard to incorporate them into a modern home without making it look stuffy. I have a few pieces of traditional furniture incorporated into my modern home. Here are some tips to highlight the traditional furniture and still maintain the modern look of your home.
Quantity of Traditional Furniture
Be mindful of the amount of traditional furniture you have in any one room. For example, you may be grateful to inherit your grandmother’s dining room set, but a table and chairs and hutch all together, may make the room look dated. To modernize it a bit, you could keep the original table and switch out the chairs and maybe paint the hutch to give it a more modern look.
Pair Traditional Furniture with Modern Accessories
An traditional table with antique accessories has a tendency to look dated. But, if you pair an traditional table with a modern vase, this immediately updates the look.
Make Them Useful
Every piece in your home should have a purpose and this is the same for antiques or traditional furniture. If you are incorporating an antique in your home, it should also have a purpose. A cabinet or a dresser may require adjustments on the inside to make it work for you, but by doing that, you are extending the life of a product and confirming its place in your home.
Learn To Say No
Sometimes you just have to say no. I have been in the position of being offered things and I really had to dig for my strength from within to say no when I know deep down that I have no use for a piece. I have also seen this where friends have been gifted or inherited a bunch of things that don’t fit their style or their house and they have struggled to make things work.
Traditional furniture or antiques can add a lovely texture and substance to any home. But it is good to keep in mind the tips above to make sure that the pieces you use make a positive contribution to your home. Houzz is always a good source for inspiration.
