To say we needed new front windows was an understatement.  The windows in the front, in particular, are baked in the sun, so the wood and the paint that we added a couple of years ago, deteriorated rather quickly.

This is the before shot with painted 45 year-old windows and ugly curtains left by the previous owners that did the job. That wood in the front, in case you were wondering is our septic access without mulch and a flower pot to hide it.

Researching Window Manufacturers

I spent a lot of time researching window companies.  I really like the look of the slim, black windows that I am seeing on new builds, so I wanted to find a manufacturer that sold that type of window.

I am not going to talk about the window manufacturer that we chose.  We are not dissatisfied, in fact, we are satisfied.  But, there were several problems along the way, that they happily resolved. I just feel that we should not have had those problems in the first place.  They took up a lot of time and dragged out the project.  If you are in the Ottawa area and want to know more about the windows, contact me directly and I will tell you.

The Window Configuration

We have three windows at the front of our house.  The one at the very top, which is at the top of our upstairs hallway, we did not change.  We have always found it to be strange that the window at the top had three panels and and the other two windows each had five.  With our new window selection we wanted to fix that so that each of the windows have three panels. We did not need openers on the bottom window, so the sections of glass are big.

We are so pleased with these slim black windows. Three panels on each of the three windows is much better.

The waiting period for the windows was quite lengthy, but we were really excited on the day they came.  There is something weird about how I feel so strangely fascinated when we have a big hole in our house.

I honestly cannot believe the difference the new slim windows make.  I feel like these windows help this old house achieve its deserved beauty.

Changing to three panels was the right choice.  We felt like we could actually see out the windows for the first time. We enjoyed the view out, but passersby also had a good view of us eating dinner.  The next step was blinds.

Blinds

We like to shop for blinds at Blinds To Go and are pleased with their service.

We chose the Serenity Blind III in the colour powder.  Three were needed for the width of our main window. We had this blind at a previous house and I just loved it.  I thought it would give us the sun block and privacy that we need, but still give us a good view.

We chose not to have a blind on the upper window as we didn’t feel that we needed it.  We only had curtains on the bottom section with our old windows and it worked fine.

We are pleased with this transition.  It looks much better and it will make a big difference when the colder weather comes.

Coming up, I will style this area.  What do you think about curtain panels? I think it would look strange not to have them on the top window and not on another floor to ceiling window in same the room.  I just hope once I style it that it doesn’t look so white, eventhough I do have an obsession with white houses.

Coming up soon, I have a table that I am revamping for this space.

Always

Leslie
