I am in my Canadian tuxedo in honour of Benjamin Moore's Denim Wash paint colour which brought this old cabinet back to life.

Welcome to week three of the One Room Challenge.  To remind you of the progress made on our 1970s basement so far,  this is what happened in week one and week two.

Basement Mood Board Colour

I had a lot of trouble confirming my plan for this basement.  I had ideas in my head, but it wasn’t until I found the wallpaper, that it all came together.

Here is the moodpboard for the basement.

The Details Explained

It is a bit difficult to depict what I am doing, so here is a bit of an explanation.

  • The shell of the basement will be white.
  • The wallpaper will go in the library area.
  • The stencil will be applied to the hearth of the fireplace.
  • We are putting carpet tiles in the whole basement.
  • I will be creating painted stripes that will go from the fireplace, around the main room.
  • The couch and cabinet that are currently there will remain and we will be adding some additional pieces from other parts of the house.

Painting Progress

This week was a big week in that the painter that we hired scraped the stippled ceiling, fixed it and painted.

Our usual painter was busy, so I put out a request in our community facebook group and got Daryl's name and he has been so helpful and just lives around the corner.

That was such a big and messy job. I am so glad to have this done. The painter also painted the:

  • baseboards
  • fireplace
  • and four doors.

The Wallpaper to Add Colour

I am so delighted to be able to collaborate again with decorroommates.com on this peel and stick wallpaper.  The minute I saw it, I knew that it reflected the updated 1970s era that I wanted to portray in the basement.  It will be a couple of weeks before the wallpaper arrives, so I took a big gamble and chose paint colours from the colours in the wallpaper sample online.

This wallpaper from Roommatesdecor.com is the perfect 1970s vibe that I was looking for. It is called Mid Century Geometric.

The Stencil for the Hearth

I like how the pattern in this stencil from Cuttingedgestencils.com has a similar vibe to the wallpaper. I will be using the colour eternity from Benjamin Moore on a white background.

The Doors

The strongest of the colours is being used on the doors. This colour is Demin Wash by Benjamin Moore. I started painting the doors, but was in so much back pain that we asked the painter to finish the job.

Colour Added to the Storage Cabinet

I painted this old cabinet that we had and it will be used to store mats and other workout equipment. This cabinet has performed so many different functions in our house over the years. Most recently, it stored gardening equipment in the garage.

A Stripe to Bring Colour to the Whole Room

I am using the three colours to create a stripe around the room.  This is my inspiration pic.

Painting the stripes will be my biggest task for next week.

Muted Colour Carpet Tiles For the Win

We also ordered the carpet this week, and this is what we chose.  It was the lightest of the samples we had to choose from and we managed to get a really good deal.  It has a beige tones which we wanted to tie into our brown leather couch.

These carpet tiles are by Boucle of Montreal.

Wood Mantle

We visited @thewoodsource which is a great resource for raw speciality woods near us. I had maple in mind, but was open to anything else that caught my eye. This unblemished piece of maple will be perfect for our mantle.

I wanted maple for the mantle to tie in with our existing furniture and to continue the 1970s feeling.

Always
