A mature boys bedroom was created for my son with a bit of paint and furniture. Accessories were also repurposed from the rest of the house.

A bit of paint and things that we repurposed from the rest of the house has resulted in a mature boys bedroom for my son Griffin.

I have to say that there were several reasons for doing this room.  The first one is that he asked, as everyone else in the family got new bedrooms.  This is the master bedroom, my oldest daughter’s bedroom and my middle daughter’s bedroom. And my son does not ask for much, so I was happy to oblige.

The second reason relates the feeling that came over me and a lot of you during the Covid lock down.  It is about getting rid of things in the house that you no longer want or use.  And I actually disliked the furniture in Griffin’s room. So as soon as he was out the door to go back to university, I sold it.  I did this knowing that we could use bedroom furniture in our storage room. This would give the room a new look.  This ticked a few boxes because it also helped to empty out our basement storage room.

Before The Mature Boys Bedroom Look

This, I am sad to say, is Griffin’s forlorn room when we started.

This room really never got the attention it needed since my son has been away at university for most of the time we have lived in this house.

My son played competitive hockey for many years and had tons of trophies and medals on display in his room.  They collected so much dust so I decided that it was time to pack them away.  I found the whole process to be so emotional. It seemed to be the end of an era for my youngest child.

Paint

I have been wanting to paint a wall black for quite some time. So. this was one of the jumping off points for his room.  My family did not give rave reviews when I did it. But, I knew they would like it in the end.

Rug

One purchase I did make for the room is this area rug from rugsusa.com.  I have purchased from them before and have always been pleased with the quality and this time was no different.  I really like the lightness that this carpet brings to the room.

Repurposed Furniture

The next step was to add in the furniture that we had in our storage room.  I don’t know about you, but I get sentimental about furniture.

The bed was one of the first pieces of furniture that I stripped and redid early in our marriage.  The bed frame has served as a guest bed and also as my oldest daughter’s bed for many years.  I like the warm wood colour and there was no way that I was touching this.

This bed was in our basement and the night table was passing its time in the living room. So happy they found a new home together.

We also added in the night stand that has served many purposes over the years. Most recently it found a place in our living room. After we redid our bedroom for the One Room Challenge, we moved it out of there.

Another piece, is this little bookcase that was my father’s when he was growing up.  I have had everywhere I have lived, since I was a teenager.

What Remained

I left in the room included the white board where my son Griffin maps out his training plan.  It’s not pretty but I admire his dedication and focus and this is an important tool for him.

This is not a pretty part of the room but I felt it was important to leave my son's training board untouched and underneath it is a bookcase that was my father's

An Updated Dresser For a Mature Boys Bedroom

The last place to come out of the storage room and free up space was the dresser.  This dresser belonged to the kids grandmother (nana) and it had seen better days.

If you saw my Instagram stories, I planned to do a colour block. But, that idea went out the window when I took off the handles and saw that the wood was marked.  In the end, I think that painting it black and adding new handles, elevates in a way that colour blocking would not.

Nana was pleased with the update on this dresser that was hers that we also had in the basement.

Accessories

I spray painted quite a few existing things gold including the curtain rod, and an existing mirror. This helped to tie things together.  The little tray from Value Village also got the golden touch. It all contributes to the feeling of a mature boys bedroom.

I picked up these gray black out curtains at Giant Tiger for a song.  Curtains from there have been used in all of our bedrooms. While they do need ironing, I highly recommend them as an inexpensive way to dress a window.

They duvet cover I already had and I added some patterned grey sheets. I like white sheets the best. But, when people are responsible for washing their own linens, a darker colour is best in my house.

Photography Helps Create a Mature Boys Bedroom

Griffin’s lovely girlfriend @leahclunie_ took this picture of Griffin wake surfing on the river. I thought it was the perfect piece to make him feel like the bedroom is his.

This picture that Griffin's lovely girlfriend took was the starting point for the room and is proudly framed above his bed.

I am so pleased with how this room turned out.  I can’t wait for Griffin to return home from university and enjoy this mature boys bedroom for himself. He will graduate next year so it’s a mature room for a mature young man. Classes are expected to go online soon at his university. He may be home sooner than we expected.

Always
